PEI DOUBLES UP SEA DOGS
February 7, 2013,
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs took on the PEI Rocket at Harbour Station in Thursday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action as PEI extended their wins streak with a 6-3 victory in front of 3,112 fans.
Mackenzie Brown scored his first of the year for the Sea Dogs and captain Pierre Durepos and Noah Zilbert also scored while Maxime Villemaire added two helpers for Saint John. Sebastien Auger made 37 saves on 42 shots in the win/loss as the Sea Dogs dropped to 19-31-1-0.
Ben Duffy has a goal and four assists, Josh Currie and a goal and two assist, Jimmy Oligny one tally and a helper and Tomas Pavelka, Erik Robichaud and Victor Provencher added singles in the win for the Rocket. Maxime Legace made 31 stops on 34 saves. PEI climbed to 29-20-2-0.
Auger had to be huge in the first period as the Rocket had a huge flurry of shots after the first five minutes.
Despite Auger’s incredible play in the first, the Rocket capitalized twice in the opening 20 minutes.
Oligny scored the first PEI goal at 8:14 and Pavelka made it 2-0 at 11:54. Both goals came on the man-advantage.
Shots in the first were 15-7 for PEI.
Two more went up for PEI early in the first. Robichaud made it 3-0 just 1:30 into the middle frame and Provencher extended the lead at 3:02.
Durepos scored his fifth of the year to make it 4-1 as the Sea Dogs had a power play. His point shot went through everyone and past Legace at 5:49. Jakub Izacky and Maxime Villemaire had the assists on the play.
The Rocket pulled further ahead in the second half of the frame as Duffy scored to make it 5-1 at 12:05.
Saint John turned up the offense in the middle period and outshot the Rocket 16-12.
Zilbert hustled hard to the net as Villemaire had the puck in the left wing faceoff circle and fired a shot towards the net. Zilbert just got enough of the shot to tip it past Legace at 8:17 of the third for his seventh of the year.
Brown notched his first goal of the year that was not a shootout goal at 12:12 of the third. Ian Saab fired a point shot that as tipped in front by Brown and fooled Legace. Andreas Tsogkas nabbed an assist on the play as well.
Currie added an empty netter with 17 seconds remaining to ice the game 6-3.
The next Sea Dogs game is scheduled for tomorrow night in Bathurst as Saint John takes on the Titan. Fans can catch all the action by tuning in to Tim Roszell on News 88.9 FM or the TELUS QMJHL Webcast.
The boys return home to take on the returning Kevin Gagné and the Rimouski Oceanic for the Journée des Francofans Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the Harbour Station box office, by phone at 657-1234 and by heading online to tickets.harbourstation.ca.
